Being a mother is a full-time job, but we know many mothers, in fact 70% of mothers with children under 18, participate in the labor force.1 Whether you invest your energy fully into being a stay-at-home mom, you work a part-time job, or put in over 40 hours a week, we want to salute you.
The civilian labor force is made up of 74.6 million women.2 And, while many might think of nurses, secretarial work, and education as women-dominated careers, some of the fastest growing women-dominated occupations are veterinarians, natural science management, pharmacists, public relations, opticians, writers, business leaders, and many more.3
For many moms working is not a choice. 40% of households with children under 18 mothers are the primary or sole providers.1 Working moms are busy shaping the future generation all while writing prescriptions or presenting in the boardroom.
According to the Pew Research Center moms are equally spending more time in the labor force AND time on child care than past generations. In 2016 moms spent around 25 hours a week on paid work vs. 9 hours of paid work in 1965. In 2016 mothers spent 14 hours a week on child care vs. 10 hours a week in 1965. Even in dual, full-time working households, 54% of mothers claim to do more work when it comes to managing children’s schedule and activities.4

Some of the top management positions for women are in human resources, social and community service, and education.5 Women are also more likely than men to have a bachelor’s degree by age 29, with 34% of women and 26% of men holding a degree.6 From managing the household to managing at the office, mothers who do both deserve recognition.
Resourcefulness, rolling with the punches, dedication; these are the traits that makeup any mother who is raising children, paying the bills, and flourishing in their career. Moms who are busy at the office need to be uplifted rather than criticized. These are women who have proven themselves hardworking and valuable in both the professional and domestic world.

Mother or not, every individual has the right to go after their dreams. Because of this we want to highlight mothers who are also entrepreneurs, also known as mompreneurs. Women own close to 10 million businesses, accounting for $1.4 trillion in receipts.7 With energy and self-motivation these mothers are building up their life with family and career.
According to a survey done by online graphic design marketplace 99designs (that polled more than 1,290 male and female business owners with at least one child under 18 from US, Europe, and Australia), 79% of mother entrepreneurs are married and 95% have a partner who brings in income.8
Many moms turn to entrepreneurship due to its flexibility as 71% are the primary childcare provider.9 Even with the flexibly of owning your own business, these mothers work hard, typically finding time to work once their child has gone to bed.

It is no shock that many mothers face a lot of pressure in the choices they make. Even while motherhood and the labor force has changed over the years, many women feel pressured to balance work and home.

Many moms may not be aware that nearsightedness (myopia) is more than a vision condition, it is a major children’s health issue. The American Optometric Association recommends a child receives their first eye exam between the ages of 6-12 months. Children who are at risk of developing vision problems should always get an eye exam as frequently as their practitioner recommends.9
